CITY OF WINTER PARK TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON CITYWIDE BROADBAND RFP

For Immediate Release: May 30, 2006 WINTER PARK - a nationally recognized Crown Community Award and City Spirit Award winner The City of Winter Park's Cultural & Economic Development Division will be holding a public meeting regarding the recent request for proposals (RFP) for a firm to design, deploy, and maintain a citywide wireless broadband network. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 20, at 6 p.m. in the Commission Chambers at City Hall located at 401 Park Avenue South. Citizens are encouraged to attend the meeting and learn about broadband technology as well as provide city staff with input regarding this initiative. The city's objective for this initiative is to select a telecommunications service provider who can work with the city to determine the uses of a wireless network employing broadband technology that will enhance the quality of life in Winter Park. Broadband technology is a high-speed transmission medium that can carry signals from multiple independent network carriers. This technology has the potential to support a wide range of frequencies and is used to transmit data, voice, and video. The RFP was issued in February and the city received a total of seven responses. The selection committee then short-listed three firms, which include Brighthouse Networks, Cellnet/SkyPilot Networks, and Clearwire, LLC. The city will give a presentation about the short-listed firms as well as an alternative proposal for a city-owned broadband system during the meeting.
